In pulsatile flow, signal oscillates during the cardiac cycle. On a gradient echo sequence, for example, signal is high during systole (greater flow related enhancement) and low during diastole (less flow related enahncement). These signal oscillations are not due to application of the phase encoding gradients and are misregistered on the phase encode axis as vascular ghosts.
